Wonder of nature in stone

In the heart of Europe, the power of the clash of the continents created a characteristic mountain rich in impressive peaks, towers and spires. Over millions of years this landscape was carved and modelled by the action of tropical seas, volcanoes and ice ages. The beauty of these “pale mountains” has fascinated man to such an extent that these mountains are counted among the wonders of the world.

Evidence of the earliest algae dates back to about 475 million years ago and it was about 390 million that the first forests took shape on land. They were the forerunner of the conifers, horsetails, the lycopods and also the flowering plants. The plants on display from their early days are among the best in the world.

Giant shells

The principal Dolomite forms a lot of important mountains in the Dolomites. Almost all the fossils are of bivalves – Megalodonts and Dicerocards, reaching sometimes more than half a metre. They were also named by the local people as “cow hoof-print mussels”. Their heart shape captures people’s imaginations.

Living fossils

Today, the ginkgo trees lead a strange niche existence. The only surviving species of Ginkgo biloba, which means “silver apricot”, was found in only a few relic zones in China until it arrived in Europe in the 17th century. Today it is planted worldwide due to its resistance to insects and environmental toxins.

The diversity of conifers

The conifers of this world are distinguished by their extraordinary diversity. Time and again they must have managed to go their own way. However, due to the incomplete fossil record, it is difficult to understand how they developed. Nevertheless, there is one area in the world where this path can be explored almost without interruption for many millions of years: the Dolomites.

First flowering plants, an “Abominable Mystery”

Charles Darwin was extremely distressed by the origin and fast spreading of the flowering plants which appeared largely about 100 million years ago. Therefore, he speculated a slow and long evolution on an extinct and lost continent. An isolated landmass called Angara (today Urals, Russia) existed indeed about 300 million years ago. Here we have to search the origin of the angiosperms.
